Fume Hood
A laboratory fume mood is a type of ventilation system that functions primarily to provide personnel protection against toxic fumes, vapours, and dust.
Its secondary function is to act as a physical barrier and protection against chemical spill, runaway reactions, and fires. Fume hoods are among the most important facilities for every laboratory as it provides protection for the scientist and people who are associated with the experiment.
However, many professionals agree that conventional fume hoods require a tremendous amount of energy. This is because it needs to exhaust a large amount of tempered air. Fume hoods continuously pull contaminated air into the hood and exhaust it to the exterior of the building.
This process increases the laboratory cost significantly. In recent years, laboratory fume hood manufacturers have developed and introduced energy-efficient low-flow/high-performance fume hoods. These were designed to improve the protection of the operator while reducing the operating cost.
